Crypto Coin Counter - FAQ

Q. Why do I get a red box with an error when I use 'Get Latest Prices'?

A. Typically this indicates one of the exchange APIs is not responding correctly, or the selected coin is no longer listed on that exchange.  Usually trying again a short time later will work, particularly with errors containing code 502, but if not please let me know which exchange coin pair is not working.

Q. I accidentally changed one or more shaded fields, and now things are not working correctly, how do I fix it?

A. You can try the undo button on the Google Apps menu to get back to before the cells changed.  If that does not work you should download a clean copy of the spreadsheet.

Q. I have far too many crypto coins, and would like to donate some to you for your fine work, how do I do that?  :)

A. There are donation addresses for LTC and BTC at the bottom of the Crypto Coin Counter main page.

    1. The first time you run the scripts you will need to do the following:
      - Click the 'Get Last Prices' button to initiate the authorization process.
      - When the 'Authorization Required' prompt appears click 'OK'.
      - A new window should open. (If not please check to see if your browser or browser plugins might be blocking the popup).
      - You may get a 'Choose an account' prompt, if so select the appropriate account, otherwise proceed to the next step.
      - At the 'This app would like to:' prompt, Click 'Accept' - the popup should close.
      - Click the 'Get Latest Prices' button and it should now work.

The prompts should look something like the examples on this page: https://developers.google.com/apps-script/guides/services/authorization

    1. I did a quick test and it looks like the API is compatible. I should have it ready via an exchange update in the next day or two.

    2. Coinbase spot prices have been added. You will need to update the exchanges from the CryptoCoinCounter menu to get the new settings.

  3. This is great! Hows it going with your mining profitability sheet? I think Im being too complicated, but I cant find out how you work out what the profitability is? how do you use the difficulty? or do point me in a direction that explains it as a formula?
    all the best

    1. What I have now is pretty manual still, and I'm not sure there is a good way to automate most of it. I log times and coin counts at the mining pool, you will need at least few hours to get a reasonable estimate. I then use the difference in time and coin counts to get approximate coins/day. I then convert that number to equivalent LTC/day using the current exchange rates. To get a comparison to direct LTC mining I use the calculator at litecoinpool as an approximation, and update it whenever the difficulty changes. With that I can see if mining the alternate coin is more profitable than LTC or not.

I find with a lot of the alt coins you do not get the production a site like coinchoose might predict, so that is why I like to compare my real mining results.

  4. How do I add new coins manually? I've tried to add e.g. MMC, so I added a line in "Coin Exchanges" with "MMC/BTC (Bter),-,,". https://bter.com/api/1/ticker/MMC_BTC works, but the script gets a 404.

    1. That should work, but make sure your Coin Exchanges are still sorted by column A.

I will check all the supported exchanges for any other new coins and release an exchange update in the near future.

  5. When I go to grant permission both accept and cancel are "greyed out" and I can not grant permission. I have been successful in the past with your sheet I'm not sure why the bad luck now??

    1. Hmm, I haven't come across that issue before. I can't reproduce it and a quick Google search didn't turn up anything. Here are some things you can try, not sure if they will work or not:
      - Restart your web browser.
      - Log out of Google and log back in.
      - Restart your computer.
      - Try a different web browser.
      - Get another copy of the spreadsheet and try again.

Please let me know if you find a solution so others can see it if they have the same issue.
